Quick Combat Tips
- Pukei-Pukei is weakest at the head and tail. However, be wary when standing directly in front or behind it as its attacks typically travel in this directions. Since it is a smaller monster, standing by its wing will allow you to remain relatively safe while still being able to reach its head or tail.
- Pukei-Pukei's main form of attack is to spit poisonous globs at hunters. Bring along Antidotes and Herbal Medicine to counteract its Poison. Note that most of its poison attacks do not flinch the hunter so it might be easy to ignore its damage-over-time effect. Always check your health bar when fighting this poisonous foe.
- Pukei-Pukei is prone to running up to berry nodes in order to stuff them in its mouth as ammunition and empower its poison attacks. Take this time to get a few free hits in.
Pukei-Pukei Attacks & Moveset
Reckless Charge - Pukei-Pukei dashes in a straight line towards hunters, attempting to trample them. Due to its low stance, this move has a rather large hitbox but can still be dodged with one properly timed roll. Beware as the monster can quickly change directions and perform a second or even third dash back.
Tail Whip - Pukei-Pukei looks to its side or its rear and then spins in 180 degrees, whipping its tail in an arc. It will often follow-up with a second tail whip, returning to its original orientation. It's easier to avoid this attack by dodging through the tail instead of away.
Talon Barrage - Pukei-Pukei leaps into the air and flaps its wings wildly as it scratches at hunters with its talons up to 3 times. The attack has a narrow hitbox and can easily be sidestepped.
Tongue Whip - Pukei-Pukei whips its long tongue in a small arc from left to right or vice versa. It will often follow-up with a second lash going the opposite direction. Simply dodge towards the monster's side to avoid this attack.
Tongue Lance - Pukei-Pukei plants its wing joints on the ground and shoots its tongue over a long distance directly in front of it. The attack has a long range but very narrow hitbox and can easily be sidestepped and punished, as the monster's tongue has a very high hitzone value.
Chest Tackle - Pukei-Pukei raises its entire upper torso while sticking its tongue out and performs a mad dash forward, crashing its inflated chest into hunters. Like most of its moves, this travels in a straightforward direction and is easy to avoid.
Poison Spit - Pukei-Pukei shoots a glob of poison at its target, leaving a small poison cloud on the ground on impact which persists for a very short duration. A variation of this move sees Pukei-Pukei shooting 3 globs consecutively in an arc. If Pukei-Pukei manages to store berries in its mouth, its poison glob attacks become empowered, allowing them to stagger hunters and leaving taller clouds of poison which can obscure the hunter's vision.
Poison Wind Blast - Pukei-Pukei spits poison as it leaps into the air, flapping its wings to fan the poison cloud forward.
Poison Tail Blast - Pukei-Pukei turns its rear towards hunters and raises its tail up high. It then ejects a cone of poison gas from its tail tip, swinging it in an arc behind it. This move can be evaded by running into the monster and dodging towards it or to its side.
