Rathalos is a Large Monster in Monster Hunter Rise (MHR or MHRise). Written as 火龙/火龍 in Chinese. Rathalos is a large and intimidating creature with a majestic red and black color scheme and wings that can reach incredible heights. It is a Fire Wyvern, meaning it is capable of using a variety of fire-based attacks, such as fireball blasts, breath attacks, and even an attack that can cause an area of effect explosion. Its wings give it the ability to fly, and this allows it to dodge attacks and swoop in on unsuspecting hunters. Large Monsters such as Rathalos are hostile and are usually the primary objective of Hunts. They provide valuable Materials when defeated.

Quick Combat Tips
- Similar to Rathian, Rathalos is weakest at its head but be wary that most of its attacks will come from that direction.
- Unlike Rathian, Rathalos frequently takes to the skies and performs many aerial attacks. Bring along Flash Bombs to quickly ground Rathalos or use Silkbind Attacks that propel you high into the air to take shots at its head. Rathalos is extremely prone to getting knocked down by heavy attacks on its head and with the advent of Wirebugs, it's easier than ever to go toe-to-toe with the King of the Skies while it is in flight.
- When knocked down by Rathalos' aerial attacks, do not get up right away and instead wait to see Rathalos' next move. The monster will often chain its moves together, especially while airborne and many of its moves deal heavy damage even to hunters with high-level armor.
- Breaking Rathalos' wings can also prove advantageous as it will reduce its ability to stay in the air for prolonged periods. Use weapons and attacks that have a lot of vertical movement to more easily break its wings.
- Aiming for Rathalos' legs can also knock it down with enough pressure. Be careful of its powerful stomp attack which it uses frequently against hunters that linger around its legs for too long. Its powerful talons can inflict the Poison effect.
- Rathalos' fire breath attacks can inflict the Fireblight effect. When combined with the Poison effect from its talons, Fireblight can quickly whittle down a hunter's health bar. Dodge several times to remove the Fireblight effect and bring along Antidotes and Herbal Medicine to remove the Poison effect.
- Rathalos can be ferocious when provoked, so use dodges and jumps to avoid their attacks and stay safe.
Rathalos Attacks & moveset
Reckless Charge - Similar to Rathian's charge, Rathalos dashes in a straight line towards hunters, attempting to trample them. Unlike Rathian's version, Rathalos only performs one charge but when enraged, it will often follow up with one of its other attacks.
Aerial Stomp - Rathalos briefly takes flight and then stomps down hard as it lands. The monster uses this move to counter players staying around its legs. If players are positioned towards the back of the attack, they will get afflicted by Poison. The attack is easy to dodge but can come suddenly while you are in the middle of a combo. Rathalos can also reposition while in the air before stomping downwards.
Powerful Bite - Rathalos winds up by pulling its head to one side and then lunges with a powerful bite as it pivots in a wide arc from side to side. It will often follow-up with a second bite pivoting in the other direction, especially when enraged.
Tail Swipe - Rathalos turns its head to its side or rear and then quickly sweeps with its tail while spinning in a 180-degree arc. It will follow up with a second sweep, returning it to its original orientation. The sweep has a rather large radius so be careful when dodging backwards. Remaining between its legs and tail will make this attack miss you while you execute some attacks of your own.
Fireball - Rathalos raises its head in an arc from its left side as the flames in its mouth glow brighter and then releases a fireball that travels in a straight line towards a hunter. Deals moderate damage but has a narrow hitbox. An alternate version of this move sees Rathalos spitting 3 fireballs consecutively. First towards a hunter, then to the monster's right and finally to its left. Rathalos can perform both versions whilst it is in flight as well, albeit they come out in a much slower, staggered fashion.
Fireball Liftoff - Rathalos raises its head straight up and then shoots a fireball downwards directly in front of it. It uses the force of the fireball's impact to spring backwards and into flight. Be careful of this move as it has no obvious tells other than the vertical head raise and comes out very quickly.
Aerial Strafe - While airborne, Rathalos will frequently reposition and will sometimes shoot a fireball while in flight. Always keep an eye on the monster while it is in the air.
Sweeping Flame Breath - While airborne, Rathalos raises its head up high as it turns to its side. It then releases a cone of flame which it sweeps across in a large arc towards the other side. Roll under the monster to evade this attack.
Incinerate - While in flight, Rathalos releases a column of flame pointed downwards on its side. It then points the flame outwards, creating a long streak of fire that deals immense damage on a direct hit as well as leaving its effects for a few seconds. The attack has a narrow hitbox and can be dodged pre-emptively due to the long animation. It is also telegraphed by audible cues from your hunter.
Talon Strike - While in flight, Rathalos quickly swoops down at a hunter, pulling its wings back and extending its powerful talons to strike at them. The attack deals heavy damage on a direct hit and Poisons hunters. Beware as Rathalos will sometimes perform a Talon Strike + Fireball combo or vice versa, both of which come out very quickly with very little telegraph.
Aerial Tail Swipe - While in the air, Rathalos pulls its tail near its face to wind-up and then lashes hunters with a vertical swipe. Get behind the monster to avoid the attack.

Didn't have the entry, googled what a Medulla was, spent 10 hunts breaking the head to get a part of the brain. Turns out you had to break the back. Thanks, MH.
