Austere mountains
Devoid of reason and laws
A rounded mass descends
Made of fangs and claws
Tumbling, tumbling
Closer and closer
And when it unfurls

MH Rise Volvidon Characteristics & Ecology

Fanged beasts with thick red carapaces that are resistant to lava. Their rounded bodies are perfect for rolling across hot surfaces, and their long tongues are ideal for capturing insect prey. Their saliva emits a paralyzing toxin that should be avoided.

The Frost Islands is a great place to hunt Volvidon, as it is the creature’s native habitat. However, it can also be found in the Shrine Ruins and the Sandy Plains.

MH Rise Volvidon Combat Info

The toxin that Volvidon spit out can paralyze on contact. You'll also want to carry some Deodorant, as the gas they emit can cover you in a stench so powerful that it makes it impossible to stomach anything.

Quick Combat Tips

  • Volvidon is weakest at its head though it may be difficult to reach when it is standing upright. It's belly makes a good secondary spot for attacks.
  • Volvidon's outer shell is very tough and will cause attacks to bounce if at Yellow Sharpness or below. Ensure your weapons can reach Green Sharpness before fighting this beast.
  • Bring along lots of Deodorant when hunting Volvidon as its Stink Cloud attack can prevent you from consuming items for healing. You can find Deodorant in the Supply Box when going in missions with Volvidon as the target.
  • Volvidon curls up into a ball very often and attacks by rolling into hunters. Well timed heavy attacks during its rolls can cause Volvidon to flinch, roll backwards and enter an extended downed state, leaving it wide open to attacks. This is easiest done with weapons that can utilize Guard Points such as the Charge Blade and Lance. You can also lure it into Barrel Bombs to achieve the same effect.
  • Volvidon is weak to water and ice element weapons, and is also affected by the paralysis and sleep status ailments.
  • Volvidon can also spit sticky, flaming saliva at hunters, which can deal damage and cause the fireblight status ailment. Be sure to dodge or guard against this attack as well.
  • Volvidon's tail can also be cut off, which can be used to craft special items.
  • Volvidon's ball form is also vulnerable to wirebug's Silkbind attacks.
  • Use the environment to your advantage, Volvidon is weak to water, so try to fight it near water sources like ponds or rivers to deal extra damage.

In general, Volvidon is a large and slow-moving monster, but it can deal a lot of damage with its charging and spit attacks, so be sure to dodge and guard against them. With proper preparation and careful play, it should be a manageable hun

Volvidon Attacks & Moveset

Armored Roll - Volvidon's bread & butter move. The creature curls up into a ball, leaving only its tough outer shell exposed. It then performs one of three rolling maneuvers:

  • Dashing Roll - Volvidon rolls quickly in a straight line either towards a hunter or away. It can follow-up with another roll several times. Anticipate its rolls and always be moving sideways.
  • Bouncing Roll - Volvidon hops around the battlefield 2 - 3 times, crushing anything in its path as it lands. Deals heavy damage on direct hits.
  • Lateral Rolls - Volvidon rolls sideways up to two times, ramming into anything in its path. While the attack deals moderate damage, Volvidon usually uses this move to reposition. It can then follow-up with a Claw Swipe, Paralytic Spit, Tongue Lash or a Dashing Roll. Keep your eyes on Volvidon as it can roll off-camera.
  • Stink Cloud - Volvidon gets down on all fours and shakes violently, releasing a large, brown cloud from its rear that afflicts hunters with the Stench status on contact. This status effect prevents hunters from using many consumables such as Potions. Be careful when low on HP and use a Deodorant to counteract the effect immediately.
  • Paralytic Spit - Volvidon spits out a yellow, paralytic projectile that travels in an arc in front of it. On contact, it afflicts hunters with Paralysis, rendering them unable to move. The spit ball has a small hitbox and can easily be sidestepped but it comes out rather quickly so stay on your toes.
  • Claw Swipe - Volvidon swings a claw from one side to the other in a very low stance just next to its hind legs. Dodge backwards or to the side of the swinging arm as it comes in to evade the attack.
  • Claw Flurry - This attack is identical to the one Arzuros uses. Volvidon raises both arms in the air while snarling and then performs up to 4 Claw Swipes from side to side in rapid succession. Get behind the monster as soon as it raises its arms and you will be able to attack it while it is stuck in its long animation.
  • Tongue Lash - Volvidon lowers its head to the ground and flicks its very long and very thin tongue outwards, lashing at hunters. This attack can snag hunters as the tongue returns to Volvidon's mouth, tossing them towards the monster. Easily sidestepped due to its extremely narrow hitbox.
  • Jumping Slam - Volvidon jumps high up and slams its bottom on the ground as it lands, dealing high damage on a direct it and also creating tremors which can cause hunters to loose their footing when near the impact zone. Watch out for Volvidon's shadow as it is airborne to avoid the attack.
