Every weapon gains a unique bonus from handicraft. This is indicated on the stat screen with the thinly colored portion of the sharpness stat. Extra handicraft will fill up the thin line, and not extend beyond that. If a weapon has no thin line, then it can not benefit.

Many weapons can gain an extra sharpness tier, or even 2 with enough handicraft, while others have less impressive boosts.

With the current patch version 1.1.2 you can only have Handicraft Lv.3 with gear. However... through Talisman skills you can gain more! I have one Talisman with +1 Handicraft.
