If you want to get the materials easily without switching to range weapons just ride your palamute and attack while riding it. you do very little damage and won't destroy them. Preferably do the rank 2 quest Case of the Creepy Crawlies to get the chance for many and with them marked on your map.

USE POISON SMOKE BOMBS, they're cheap and the intended way to kill bugs without destroying them. Just make sure you use the "Wait!" command so your companions don't yoink the kill and destroy them before you can smoke bomb them.
