Its terrifying creator soon reveals itself
The lord of the tundra is heartless and cold

Leading foolish creatures to an icy grave

MH Rise Velkhana Characteristics & Ecology

Known as the "Ice Dragons that Freeze All" or the "Iceborne Wyvern," there exist few records of Velkhana, as such, they remain shrouded in mystery. Their icy breath is so cold that it can form massive spires and walls of ice out of nowhere, and is even powerful enough to freeze other monsters. Some reports indicate that Velkhana will freeze their rivals in order to establish their domain.

Velkhana returns in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak! Originally introduced in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne as the Flagship Monster for MHW's major expansion, this frigid Elder Dragon holds dominion over ice and the cold. Velkhana has the body structure of a traditional western dragon; quadrupedal with a slender, body, majestic wings and a unique tail with a spear-like tip. Its scales are a deep blue color, accented by a silvery-white outer layer which gives them the appearance of bird feathers. Velkhana's mystical command of the cold allows it to cover its scales in an armor of frost, further accentuating its icy form. This feature, along with its tiara-like crown of horns gives Velkhana a very regal appearance.

Velkhana's control over ice and the cold has adverse effects on the weather where ever the Elder Dragon prowls. This control allows it to instantly freeze a large area along with anything within, making entire swathes of land with frozen statues of small Monsters a common sight when a Velkhana is around. In combat, it prefers to completely freeze its opponent with its supercooled breath before shattering them with a charge or a powerful stab from its tail. Velkhana can also create icy platforms in the area to trap its foes but experienced hunters have been known to use these platforms to their advantage, jumping off of them to land powerful aerial strikes or as a way to quickly avoid incoming danger. Velkhana affects the area's climate to such an extent that icicles form in the air to rain on the unsuspecting.

MH Rise Velkhana Combat Info

Velkhana clad themselves in armor made of ice. By destroying parts of this icy armor, it is possible to suppress their immense power, but precision is required. Note that the walls of ice Velkhana create can be destroyed, so take out any that block your way and get back in the fight.

  • Threat Level: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
  • Elemental iceblightg icon mhr wiki guideIce Damage Monster
  • Enraged Mode: Velkhana flies up and roars. Ice forms at the tips of Velkhana's horn, wings, and tail, and around it's neck and forelegs. Snow begins to fall and the environment takes on a frosty blue hue.
  • Rampage: Velkhana does not appear in the Rampage.

Quick Combat Tips:

  • Staying close to or underneath Velkhana's stomach allows you to avoid many of its deadly attacks such as its breath attack, targeted tail attack, linear icicle attacks etc.
  • Velkhana's ice walls can be destroyed. Be careful, however, as though your attacks will get blocked by the walls, Velkhana's attacks will not get blocked.
  • Use Flash Bombs while Velkhana is flying to ground it.

MH Rise Velkhana Attacks & Moveset

  • Tackle - Velkhana does a quick tackle to hunters in front of it. Deals a small amount of damage and staggers the hunter.
  • Tail Pierce - Velkhana has two variations of this move. One variation has Velkhana briefly fly up and thrust its tail under itself to hit the hunter directly in front of it. The other variation has Velkhana angle itself sideways to hit the hunter next to it. This sideways variation can be avoided by dodging towards Velkhana. These Tail Pierces can be done up to 3 times in quick succession.
  • Tail Swipe - Velkhana has two variations of this move. One variation is as a follow up to the sideways Tail Pierce, where it swipes only it's tail in a small arc. In the other variation, Velkhana swipes it's whole backside, hitting hunters in a larger arc.
  • Ice Beam - Velkhana shoots a long beam of frost from it's mouth. It has four variations of this move - one where Velkhana fires directly in front of it for a long period of time, one where Velkhana fires quickly twice, tracking a hunter, one where Velkhana sweeps the beam from left to right or vice versa, and one where Velkhana flies up and fires diagonally in front of it. If there are patches of frost on the ground when these ice beams are fired, ice walls will spawn in their place. For variations where Velkhana stays on the ground, these are great windows to get some good damage in if you are not targeted by or in the line of fire of Velkhana's attack.
  • Ice Eruption - Velkhana targets a hunter far away from it, summoning a large chunk of ice directly under them, then another next to them. Velkhana seldom uses this move if all hunters are in close proximity to it.
  • Icicle Wave - Velkhana marks a straight line of frost in front of it, then breathes out clusters of ice that expand outwards like a wave.
  • Icicle Ring - While flying, Velhana breathes out frost directly under it, summoning rings of ice that expand outwards and explode. It is safer to run/dodge out of the range of the explosion, but also possible to stand in between the rings to avoid any damage. Hunters may also dodge towards the middle of the attack after the inner rings have exploded.
  • Summon Icicle - While flying, Velkhana spins in the air while breathing out frost. While the breath itself does no damage, this move causes icicles to pop out of the ground at random for a short period of time. This move is available when Velkhana is enraged.
  • Blizzard Bomb - While flying, Velkhana breathes out a dome of frost with a large AoE in front of it. After a few seconds, it explodes dealing heavy ice damage. If you do not have time to run out of the AoE, sheathe your weapon and dive-evade just before/when the dome is about to explode. This move is available when Velkhana is enraged.

What have they done to velk? So fun in monster hunter world… but it’s just boring 50k hp damage sponge in ice borne, at least make it make sense… arch tempered with double damage for that hp. It’s a boring fight that just drags on… it just runs around and playfully paws at you with it’s crap damage, then you finally kill it after so much hp… didn’t feel threatened, just bored…

'Known as the "Ice Dragons that Freeze All"' This has to be a mistranslation right? I really don't think someone would let a title like that go through. They should've made its exclusively "The Iceborne Wyvern".
