Despite what the level 1 text says, there's no downside for getting hit, the charging process just ends prematurely. At full charge (Blue), your next attack will cause the powder to explode, dealing fixed damage to the monster similar to Blast.

Anything that causes you to flinch will make the powder to ignite (excluding ally attacks), so having skills like Windproof, Earplugs, etc or using moves with hyperarmor like GS's shoulder tackle will stop the powder from detonating prematurely.
