Great Sword Builds in Monster Hunter Rise (MH Rise) are Builds that cover a few popular recommended and some personally crafted builds for and from the community. These builds were created around the weapon types, each with a specific set of handpicked Weapons, Equipment and complementing Skills and Decor. These builds with Specfic Weapons may be paired with a set of Armor to optimize the combination in order to create a Build type focused on the Skills available with the selected equipment.

Best Great Sword Builds Monster Hunter Rise

In MH Rise, most Great Sword builds are going to be built around raw attack damage and affinity rather than element/status. Although elemental Great Sword was a somewhat viable choice in Monster Hunter World thanks to the Frostcraft armor set bonus (gradually increases the hunter's damage while they are not attacking or they have their weapon sheathed, then gradually decreases it back to normal as they attack). But Rise has no such skills, meaning that Great Sword is back to being mostly a raw damage type weapon. Most builds will be centered around maximizing raw damage through crits, meaning affinity is a very important stat for the Great Sword.

Great Swords tend to excel at "hit and run" playstyles, in which the player finds an opening, deals a massive amount of damage, and then gets out before the monster can retaliate/recover. Because of this, the most useful skills on Great Sword are going to be those that compliment these "hit and run" tactics, allowing the Great Sword to do what it does best: dealing a heck ton of damage with a single attack. (Lewisriver)

Switch Skills

  1. Tackle/Guard Tackle - Both have their pros and cons, based on personal preference
  2. True Charged Slash/Rage Slash - True Charged Slash is usually the better option for most situations/builds, however a few specific builds such as the Narga Dragonheart Great Sword build have great synergy with Rage Slash, and certain monsters are easy to abuse with it if used right.
  3. Hunting Edge/Adamant Charged Slash - Again, a matter of preference. Hunting Edge is especially useful when going against monsters that have hard-to reach weak points.

MH Rise Best Great Swords Builds: Weapons by Element

Raw Damage

  1. Dark of Night - Arguably the best Great Sword in the current meta, comes with white sharpness and a whopping 35% base affinity, as well as a level 2 slot. Although it only has 180 base attack, applying the Attack III rampage skill and equipping certain armor skills can easily bring it up to over 200, as well as increase its affinity to over 50%. With the right combination of skills, you can even achieve an effective affinity of 100%.
  2. Rampage Cleaver S - Another pretty good raw damage Great Sword. Can achieve an attack of 220 and an affinity of 20% with the right combination of rampage skills, however base sharpness only reaches blue, and runs out pretty quick.

Fire

  1. Rathalos Firesword - Pretty good elemental Great Sword with 40 Fire and 210 attack. Sharpness reaches blue, but runs out extremely quickly. Has Element Exploit and Attack Boost III as possible rampage skills. Comes with one level 1 slot.
  2. Rampage Cleaver S - Using the right combination of rampage skills, you can reach 50 Fire and 185 attack. Sharpness only reaches blue, and runs out fairly quickly.

MH Rise Great Sword Builds: Armor Skills

Tier 1
Attack Boost A flat increase in raw damage is always useful, regardless of which weapon you are using. Great Sword in particular can capitalize on the increase in raw damage because of its heavy hitting nature.
Critical Eye Affinity is a great stat on Great Swords, as it compliments the Great Sword's high potential for burst damage. The higher your affinity, the more likely your attacks will be critical hits, which is a 25% increase to the already insane burst damage it can deal.
Critical Boost Yet another skill that increases the Great Sword's potential for burst damage. When this skill is maxed out, critical hits will add a 40% increase to the damage done by your attacks, which is almost double what it was before. Another great way to maximize your overall DPS.
Weakness Exploit This skill boosts the affinity of any attack that hits a monster's weak spot, increasing your chances of landing a critical hit for maximum damage. Note that the effects of this skill only activate when attacking a weak spot on a monster.
Focus Decreases the amount of time it takes to charge your attacks, allowing you to deal massive damage much quicker than before. A shorter charge time also means there's less of a chance that the monster catch you while you're in the middle of charging an attack.
Tier 2
Handicraft Increases your weapon's maximum sharpness. Remember that sharpness is a factor in how much damage your attacks do, so the more sharpness you have the higher your DPS
Maximum Might Increases your attack when your stamina is full. Has great synergy with Great Sword, due to the fact that while you are charging your attacks, your stamina is still able to refill itself. Usually, by the time you've fully charged an attack, your stamina will have refilled itself all the way, which means that this skill will almost always give your charged attacks a damage boost because you will almost always have a full stamina bar when you actually land the attack.
Critical Draw Boosts your affinity for a short amount of time after performing a draw attack. Has great synergy with the playstyle used by Great Sword. Allows you to run in, perform a draw attack on a monster, then immediately start charging another attack. As long as you don't take too long charging your next attack, you'll be able to perform a charged attack with bonus affinity, almost guaranteeing that it will be a critical hit.
Tier 3
Speed Sharpening Decreases the time spent sharpening your weapon. Always a good skill to have when using a Blademaster weapon.
Earplugs Negates the effect of certain monster roars depending on skill level. Great quality of life skill that has particularly good synergy with Great Sword. This skill lets you use monster roars as an opportunity to unleash a few fully charged attacks for free without worrying about getting hit by the monster.
Quick Sheathe

Decreases the time it takes to sheathe your weapon. Great quality of life skill that compliments the "Get in, deal lots of damage, get out" playstyle commonly used with Great Sword.

Razor Sharp

Each attack has a chance to not consume your weapon's sharpness. Although not as useful on Great Sword as it is for faster hitting weapons, it is still a decent skill that will prevent you from burning through your weapon's sharpness too quickly.

Agitator Increases attack and affinity when large monsters become enraged. Provides boosts to two of the most useful stats for Great Swords whenever a monster becomes enraged, which will usually be for at least half of the time you're hunting them.
Flinch Free Prevents the hunter from being knocked back by certain attacks. Pretty much mandatory for all weapons if you're going to be playing multiplayer, but also is pretty useful when hunting solo, as it allows you to charge your attacks without worrying about being interrupted by smaller attacks.

MHRise Dragonheart Great Sword Build

The Great Sword can be used to create a Critical Build, using the Dark of Night with 180 attack and 35% Affinity. In order to gain access to the skills, Weakness Exploit, Resuscitate, Dragonheart and Resentment, characters may choose to equip the Valtrax set armor. With this set, the Dragonheart Skill is stacked bringing up all defensive stats. This set pairs with the Greatsword well due to the Ray slash and Adamant Charge Slash. All together this armor set will give a player 35 raw +10% attack power +50% Affinity with 2-3 slots.  At Level 4 and 5 also grants additional Elemental Resistances in additional to increasing a percentage of attack power. Another important skill to have paired with any Greasword is Focus. This grants the ability to speed up the charge attacks.

MHRise Great Sword Damage Build

Great Swords are known for dealing a lot of high physical damage, so the focus will be mainly on having high critical damage and high level attacks. Factors in these stats to take note of are the general weapon attack levels and Skills that could boost attacks such as Critical Boost, Heroics, Resuscitate which affects attack power when affected by a status,  Attack Boost, and Weakness Exploit. In this build we focus on Rampage Cleaver S, which can be interchanged with Dark of Night. Both have high Raw Damage, with Dark of Night falling slightly behind Rampage Cleaver S when it comes to damage but have a higher Affinity percentage.
